Short messages of spiritual support for adult survivors of child sexual abuse

March 2025, Week 4: What to do while waiting

Waiting is not easy. I sometimes wish the good Lord would just ZAP us and fix everything that has gone wrong. But we trust our Creator’s timing in this long game of restoration. So we can wait actively instead of passively, staying occupied while we trust that God is also busy on our behalf.

Here are some examples of things that you can do. Please start small, so you don’t get discouraged; pick one activity that you would most enjoy, and then work on doing it regularly.

–Research has found that regular physical exercise, especially in a group with likeminded people, can be very helpful for survivors. Your insurance may pay for a gym that offers an exercise class like Zumba, Pilates, or yoga. Or many communities offer free classes through their recreation departments.

–Some people enjoy keeping a journal, with words or with pictures. If you like that, start writing a sentence or two every day. Or sketch a quick picture, or clip something out to paste in your journal. Or you could do all three!

–You might find it helpful to volunteer somewhere once a week. There are plenty of ways that you can help strengthen your community; just be sure it’s a situation that you feel comfortable in. Please email me, any time, if you have questions or prayer requests. Or you might just want to say “Hello.” (Mary.Brown@SilenceBrokenNow.org.) I’d love to hear from you.
