Short messages of spiritual support for adult survivors of child sexual abuse

May 2025, Week 4 – 4 Things to Remember, #4

Feelings are not always reliable

We know that sometimes our feelings are inaccurate, and it’s wise to remind ourselves of that fact. (For instance, “I feel like no one loves me but I know that people do.”)

But let’s be gentle with ourselves. Let’s not fuss at ourselves, or get angry or irritated because of our feelings. Maybe when you were a child, your feelings were ignored or hurt and no one cared about them; but now you can treat yourself better than you were treated by others. You can pay attention to your feelings and remind yourself that they are a part of being human. Jesus had feelings, too.

It’s okay to talk to yourself and acknowledge your feelings. Tell yourself that you have reasons for feeling that way, and remind yourself that your feelings will change. Maybe do something simple that brings you back to the present place and time, like taking a walk or enjoying a short dance break. And you can always talk to God about your feelings, because our Creator cares deeply about you. And your feelings.
