People are talking a lot about freedom, but what does it really mean? For people who seek to follow Christ, I think it means we are free to become all that we were created to be; freedom to grow and thrive, by God’s definition; freedom from the bonds of sin, shame, fear, death, and deceit; freedom to choose well and lovingly.
We’ll look at those concepts this month. For now, how do we get to be free? Jesus said freedom comes through knowing the truth (John 8:32). As survivors, we often learn the truth of our abuse slowly. It’s painful. We learn about those who failed to protect us, those who harmed us, those who didn’t provide help after we were hurt. You may not be ready to speak this truth to others, but it is essential for you to gradually admit the truth to yourself about your abuse. Start with the fact that it was never your fault.
Please contact me if you have questions or comments; I’m a survivor too (Mary.Brown@SilenceBrokenNow.org). Let’s move toward freedom in truth.
