Short messages of spiritual support for adult survivors of child sexual abuse

September 2025, Enemies #1

Yes, we have enemies. But maybe there’s a difference between an enemy and a hindrance.

Really anyone who tries to keep us from growing closer to God is a hindrance, someone who delays our progress or makes it difficult. Anyone who deceives us and tries to keep us from the truth is a hindrance; anyone who wants us not to be all that God wants us to be is a hindrance. Of course we know that our Lord is stronger than any hindrance.

But I think our enemies are bigger than individuals. I can’t speak for you but I know some of my enemies are fear, and certain memories, and pain that I should never have had to endure. These are real enemies, as real as Goliath when David faced him without any real weapons.

We’ll discuss enemies this month. For now, know that our enemies are real but God is more real. They are strong but God is stronger. They are present but God is more fully present, which is why when God “prepares a table before us in the presence of our enemies” (Psalm 23:5) it is possible for us to sit down, relax, and enjoy the feast.
