Short messages of spiritual support for adult survivors of child sexual abuse

December 2025, Giving to God #1

You’ve probably heard about giving to God for most of your life, if you’ve been in or around a church. But maybe there hasn’t been much talk about why we give to God.

Like with any other gift, it’s better when we give out of love or affection instead of obligation. I cringe when I hear people say, “This is what we ought to do for the Lord.” Let’s give to God because we care about our relationship, and because we appreciate it, and because we are learning to love the Lord.

One thing we can give—though it’s not always easy—is truth. We can respect our Creator enough to be honest. As survivors, we have a lot to be upset about. If we’re feeling angry at God, or disappointed, or resentful, let’s go ahead and say that. There’s no point in faking prayer. Let’s tell the Lord how we’re feeling, and why…and then, let’s finish up by adding a “but:”

“But I want to trust you.”

“But I’m asking you to help me get past this.”

“But I’m not leaving you.”
