GIVING RESPECT
What else can we offer God? We can give our respect, starting with our words. Let’s try not to use God’s name for anything other than prayer and praise. It’s a common thing nowadays for people to exclaim “Oh my God!” or “Jesus!” when they’re irritated, surprised, or upset. But how would you like it if someone used your name to speak their anger or pain?
As survivors, we know what it means—at a very deep level—to be disrespected. Often words were used to force us to keep secrets, or to make us feel like trash. Here, in this relationship that matters most, let’s be sure our words reflect respect for our Lord. And when we give God respect it means we are acknowledging, and reminding ourselves, that God knows more than we do. God is stronger than we are. God is perfectly wise, good, loving, and trustworthy.
Let’s work to remind ourselves that this is always true, and use our words to show respect for the One who loves us most.
