I’m resistant to change, and maybe you are too. As survivors, we often crave security and safety. We want to feel that we’re in control now, because when trauma happened we were unable to control it, and we were harmed. Change holds uncertainty and we can’t control the unknown, so change is scary.
But life is filled with change so we develop courage to cope. Mark Twain said that “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.” To be courageous doesn’t mean that we feel no fear; it means we don’t let fear control us. And for us, as seekers of God’s path, it means that we work on believing God is right there with us every step of the way.
This doesn’t mean that bad things won’t happen to us. But it means our loving Creator will work to turn those things into blessings for us, and will never, ever abandon us. So while we may still feel afraid at the thought of change, we can move forward in courage.
